This year, we have been invited back to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of this Historic Event after having been invited to, and participating in, the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings 5 years ago. The Band will perform several concert performances in Paris and Normandy, as well as performing in the parade that will follow the course of Omaha Beach between the villages of Vierville-sur-Mer and Saint Laurent-sur-Mer, 2 of the first towns liberated on June 6th, 1944.
As our WWII Veterans are fewer in number every year, this anniversary will quite possibly be one of the last events in which our students can interact with the men and women who played a role in WWII. It is our goal to immerse our students in living history and task them with being the next generation of memory keepers...honoring and remembering those whom we call the Greatest Generation.
As an educator, the opportunity to bring students to France for the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings of World War II holds significant educational, historical, and cultural importance. But most importantly, we get to take this generation of students and make them the next group of memory keepers for those we call “The Greatest Generation”. The Albany Marching Falcons will be the only band representing NYS playing the parade route along Omaha Beach, and by doing so our students will gain an intimate perspective on this incredible moment in History. As an inner city District, many of our students face economic challenges and in an effort to ensure that every student who wants to participate can, we are asking your help in reaching our goal of $100,000.00. Here are several reasons why such an experience will be valuable for our student musicians:
